Analogue Radio Switch Off |
|
You've probably heard about the analogue radio switch off. There will be nothing on medium wave or long wave, and VHF FM broadcasts will cease. The government is trying to force you to throw away the radio you use in your kitchen, force you to chuck out your bedside clock radio, force you to scrap your car radio, force you to ditch your expensive hi-fi tuner, force you to do away with that little radio you use in your shed or garage, force you to switch off your treasured vintage valve radio... And they want you to replace all your radios with something which is not only expensive, but doesn't even work properly. The stereo until in your daughter's bedroom - SCRAP! The music centre your son has in his room - SCRAP The stack system, the mini hi-fi, grandma's transistor radio... SCRAP! Even the old tranny radio you take out on picnics - SCRAP! Digital radio either works or it doesn't, there's no in between. Many people have contacted me and said that they'd rather have an analogue radio which fades out and crackles now and then, than a digital radio which just cuts out and goes quiet. It's a good point. With an analogue radio, you can still listen to the news or music if the station fades out slightly. However, with a digital radio, the station cuts out and you hear nothing at all. AN INTERESTING THOUGHT FM pirate stations in London and other cities are a huge headache for Ofcom. Now, here's a thought... With the FM band clear of BBC and other stations, the pirates will have a field day. If the pirates get their act together, they will have a massive audience. After all, there will be nothing else to listen to on your car radio. And the same might happen on the vacant medium wave band. It's just a thought. The government forced us to listen to the BBC in the past... Back in the sixties when Radio Caroline and London were first transmitting from ships in the North sea, they were NOT pirates. Unhappy at the popularity of these radio stations and loss of listeners to the BBC radio stations, the government brought in The Marine Offences Act, which made the stations pirates. However, Radio Caroline chose to defy the new law and actually became a pirate radio station. So, what was it all about? Simples! The BBC couldn't compete with these popular radio stations so what did they and the government do with the competition? They outlawed them! With Radio London, and eventually Caroline gone, those who wanted pop music were forced to listen to BBC Radio One. The trouble was that they got the NDO's version of Beatles songs, the Who's songs, the Rolling Stones' songs, in fact every artist's songs. The NDO? The Northern Dance Orchestra played popular music on Radio One because it was cheaper than the BBC having to pay royalties to the original artists - the BBC called it 'needle time'. So, the government totally wrecked radio back in those days - and now they want to do it again.
