Most badly scratched and chipped radio cabinets will need stripping, staining, sealing, finishing and finally polishing to bring them back to their former glory. Unfortunately, some cabinets will have been too badly damaged. If this is the case, you have two choices… You can either scrap the radio, which would be a shame, or you can replace the veneer. If your radio cabinet has deteriorated to the point where the old veneer is coming away or the cabinet has severe damage, you can still save your treasured radio.
I no longer restore cabinets as I’m too busy with radio repairs. However, re-veneering, staining, sealing, finishing and finally polishing isn’t as difficult as you might think.
The series of photos below show a cabinet being repaired and veneered through to the polishing stage. It’s time consuming but not too difficult so why not have a go?
